PHNOM PENH: The National Election Committee (NEC) reminded Cambodians of their constitutional duties and advised people not to be deceived by opposition groups that encourage them to invalidate their votes in the election on July 23.

In a press release issued on July 11, the NEC began by recalling a preface in the Cambodian Constitution that demands the nation, “strengthen the national unity, to defend the Cambodian territory, to preserve the precious sovereignty and the marvelous civilization of ANGKOR, to re-build the country and become once again an "Oasis of Peace" based on the system of a liberal multi-party democracy, to guarantee human rights, to ensure the respect of law, to be highly responsible for the destiny of the nation forever evolving toward progress, development and prosperity.”

The NEC then encouraged voters to support their favorite political party, as they have done in the past.

Meanwhile, the NEC warned that those who incite others to destroy or invalidate their ballots will be held legally responsible. The committee stated that such an act falls under the new amendment passed last week under Article 142, which requires a fine of 5 million to 20 million Riels (about $1,200 to $4,800) to anyone found guilty of obstructing the election process. Additionally, those found guilty will be banned from running for office for at least five years under the new law.

The NEC urged people not to be deceived by unjust acts that are intended to destroy democracy and the rights of the people by leading them to commit illegal offences.
